Southport councillor suspended after being charged with money laundering

A councillor has been suspended from the Conservative group following an investigation into allegations of fraud at a Southport care home .

Cllr David Barton, who represents Dukes Ward, has been temporarily removed from the party after being charged with money laundering.

He is one of six people to have been charged by detectives from Merseyside Police ‘s Economic Crime Team. Those charged will appear before South Sefton Magistrates in Bootle on April 29.

Leader of the Conservative group, Cllr Terry Jones said: “In accordance with the national Conservative party rules, Cllr David Barton has been suspended pending the outcome of the case”

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “We are aware of the police investigation and subsequent charges made.

“We have assisted to ensure management cover is in place at Barton Park and we are currently working closely with the Care Quality Commission.

“Our priority is protecting all the vulnerable people involved and we will continue to support them in a dignified and sensitive manner.”
