Fox Lake cop’s widow, accused of money laundering, seeks husband’s pension
The widow of shamed Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz has applied for her late husband’s pension as she awaits trial on charges she participated in his past alleged crimes.
Seven months after authorities said her husband staged his suicide to look like a homicide, Melodie Gliniewicz’s request for his pension puts the local board that will have to decide the matter in what experts call an unprecedented predicament.
Authorities concluded that, after 30 years with the department, Lt. Gliniewicz shot himself last fall amid fears that his illegal activities were about to be exposed. Those crimes, investigators said, included the theft of thousands of dollars from the local Explorers youth policing program he ran for many years.
Since his death, Melodie Gliniewicz has been charged with felony money laundering and misuse of charitable funds, allegations also tied to the Explorers money. Gliniewicz, 51, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and her lawyer has said she, too, was a victim of her husband’s deceptions.
